Der Bake Oven has been in the same location in Berlin Ohio, in the heart of Amish Country, for 27 years. Ruth Mast has been the owner for the past 14 years after working for the previous owners since 1987. When the opportunity came up to buy the business in January 1997, Ruth purchased it.
Owning and operating a bakery/cafe shop has always been a dream of Ruths. She came from a big family of Bakers per say. "My grandpa and grandma had an in-home bakery and my Aunt Emma also had a bakery". Ruth would go and help them out in the summer time as a young girl. She just loved seeing those fresh baked rolls and breads coming out of the oven. The aroma was delicious as Aunt Emma would say. She enjoyed being up in the early hours of the day while the rest of the world was still asleep to help with baking.
Ruth was used to early hours as I grew up in an Amish home in Wayne Co., Ohio, where we had to work on the farm. At the age of 16 she started working at a bakery and restaurant close to home. She worked the night shift when a position opened up in the restaurant. She then waited on tables and cooked in the kitchen if needed. Ruth really enjoyed it all, especially the waitress position because she could interact with the customers.
It was her pleasure to serve delicious meals, putting smiles on the faces of her customers. Giving good service was always the most important to Ruth, and it still is. When Ruth started working for Der Bake Oven in 1987 she continued her desire to be the best at customer service and quality in her baked goods she served. Now as the owner of Der Bake Oven, customer service is still right at the top of the list. Serving the single cup of coffee and doughnut guy, to the hair stylist on her way to work grabbing something in a rush, to a cup of homemade beefy vegetable soup and chicken salad sandwich for the person on lunch break, to the bigger pie orders she sends to the B&W Restaurant every morning. They are all very important to her.
When you walk in the door, you'll be greeted with smiles and with the delicious aroma of home made goodies and fresh ground coffee every morning! You'll smell maple cream sticks, our famous chocolate donuts with cream filling and glazed donuts fresh off the drying rack.
Come mid morning, we have our dinner rolls and very popular honey wheat bread. Our specialty is our home made pies and in Holmes Co. we are known for our Apple Snitz half moons! Later in the day you'll find us making our cookies that are made with all the freshest ingredients. All our products are made from scratch! No mixes used here!
Ruth and the girls all take pride at Der Bake Oven for using the freshest ingredients! Last but certainly not least, Ruth now makes her own home made ice creams, a few flavors are: Blueberry Cheesecake, Coconut Almond Joy, Caramel Mocchiato, Butter Finger Blast, Turtle Treasure just to name a few. Come visit us at Der Bake Oven. We look forward to serving you with a smile!
